Why More Singaporeans Are Rethinking Trust Planning
Posted on July 23, 2026 by admin

For many people, trusts have long been viewed as something reserved for ultra-high-net-worth families. Today, that perception is changing. As more Singaporeans think about preserving wealth across generations, trusts are increasingly becoming part of conversations around estate and legacy planning.

Recent studies reflect this growing shift. According to UBS’s Global Next Generation Report 2026 from Reuters, more families across Asia-Pacific are preparing for intergenerational wealth transfers, with many heirs seeking professional guidance to navigate succession planning. At the same time, a survey highlighted by The Business Times found that two-thirds of Singapore’s wealthy individuals are concerned that their legacy may not last beyond the next generation.

Wealth transfer is becoming a bigger priority

Singapore is expected to see significant wealth pass from one generation to the next over the coming decades. While growing wealth remains important, many families are now asking a different question: How can we ensure our wealth continues to benefit future generations as intended?

Without proper planning, assets may become difficult to manage, family members may have different expectations, and the distribution process can become more complicated than anticipated.

Trusts offer more than wealth preservation

A trust is a legal arrangement that allows assets to be managed by appointed trustees for the benefit of chosen beneficiaries.

While every family’s circumstances are unique, trusts can provide greater clarity over how and when assets are distributed. For example, parents may prefer their children to receive funds gradually as they reach certain milestones, rather than inheriting everything at once.

Trust structures may also help provide continuity for family wealth by ensuring assets are managed according to clearly documented intentions.

Estate planning is about protecting relationships too

One of the biggest misconceptions about estate planning is that it focuses only on financial assets.

In reality, thoughtful planning can also reduce uncertainty for loved ones. Clearly documenting your wishes and establishing an appropriate structure can help minimise confusion, reduce the likelihood of disputes, and provide greater confidence during an already emotional time for the family.

Rather than leaving important decisions to chance, families can create a framework that reflects both their financial goals and personal values.

Trust planning is not one-size-fits-all

Although trusts are becoming more widely considered, they are not necessary for every individual or family.

Whether a trust is suitable depends on factors such as your family circumstances, the types of assets you own, your long-term objectives, and how you would like your wealth to be managed in the future. Trusts are often most effective when considered alongside other estate planning tools such as Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney as part of a holistic legacy plan.

Building wealth is only one part of creating a lasting legacy. Equally important is ensuring that your wishes are clearly documented and that your loved ones are supported when the time comes.
