Like us you probably love a good movie or two on your days off. Any film buff would agree that the financial world makes for great cinema; where else can you find the compelling elements of tragedy, comedy, ingenuity, catastrophe and redemption all at once? You may even pick up a tip or two about financial planning!
Here are a few of our favourites; are these on your must-watch list too?
- Wall Street (1987) – An Oliver Stone classic that intended to show the excesses and hedonism of Wall Street, this movie still wields incredible power as a recruiting tool for finance professionals nearly 30 years after it was made.
- Rogue Trader (1999) – Based on the real-life story of Nick Leeson, this movie tells the story of a trader who single-handedly caused the insolvency of Barings Bank, the world’s second oldest merchant bank. Once a rising star on the Singapore trading floor, like the proverbial meteorite Leeson imploded as quickly as he ascended – his story makes for a great lesson in risk management and financial oversight.
- Margin Call (2001) – Exploring themes of capitalism, greed and investment fraud, the story takes place over 36 hours at a large Wall Street investment bank and highlights the beginning of the 2007-08 financial crisis.
- The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) – This Martin Scorsese-helmed biopic chronicles the rise and fall of famous stock scammer, Jordan Belfort; recounting (and dramatising) his career as a stockbroker in New York City and how corruption and fraud ultimately led to his downfall.
Movies have the amazing ability to take us inside pivotal moments of deeply flawed characters, and serve to remind us of our own potential and vulnerability. Feeling inspired or looking for some inspiration? Pop in a DVD, sit back and enjoy!
